Dear family, how could a man who was beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, and thrown into prison look at all of that trauma and call it light and momentary?
That man was the apostle Paul, and he was not out of touch with pain. He had a way of seeing his suffering that did not deny its weight, yet still refused to let it crush him. Scripture calls that way of seeing a scale.
Paul Was Not Minimizing Suffering
In Second Corinthians chapter four, verse seventeen, Paul writes that “our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” At first that sounds almost impossible coming from a man who suffered so much. How could beatings and shipwrecks and prison be called light? But notice carefully what Paul is doing, and what he is not doing.
He was not minimizing human suffering, and he was certainly not offering the shallow, toxic positivity that pretends pain does not hurt. Paul had felt the whip on his back and the stones against his body. He knew grief and loneliness and fear firsthand. What he was doing here was something far deeper. He was using a scale.
“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
2 Corinthians 4:17-18
On one side of the scale he laid his present affliction, real, heavy, and painful. He did not pretend for a moment that it weighed nothing. But on the other side he laid eternity itself, the weight of glory God is preparing for His children. And next to that eternal weight, even his deepest suffering was outweighed. Not erased, not dismissed, but outweighed.
Put Your Trouble on the Scale
Dear friend, your trouble today is real. I am not asking you to pretend it is small, and I am not asking you to force a smile over a breaking heart. Paul never did that, and God does not ask it of you either. What I am asking is this: put your trouble on the scale.
Set your present hardship on one side, whatever it may be, the hard diagnosis, the crushing financial pressure, the loss that still aches every single morning. Do not shrink it or hide it. Let it sit there in all its weight. Then set the eternal promises of God on the other side, the glory He is preparing, the unbroken presence of Christ, the full restoration that is surely coming for all who are His.
When you weigh the two honestly, in the true light of eternity, something quietly shifts inside you. You begin to see that what is crushing you now is not the final word over your life. The affliction is genuinely heavy, but it is not endless. The glory is genuinely coming, and it will never fade or fail. Paul weighed the two with his own scarred hands and found that eternity tipped the scale every single time.
Let that be your comfort today, dear family. Your pain is not being dismissed by heaven. It is being outweighed by something far greater and far more lasting than itself.
